Who is Peter?

The Person Behind Peter’s Paycheck!

Peter, neuro diverse, has been gainfully employed in a for profit setting since 1981! Peter is a math genius and an accomplished artist, but he is non-verbal and cannot cross the street by himself. He takes pride in his work and arrives excited and ready to assist. He has a terrific sense of humor. He’s been known to slip one red pen in a box of blue but his infectious laughter usually gives him away and signals the team leader to check his work. We honor Pete and his years of integrated employment with Peter’s Paycheck!

Peter's Paycheck

Peter's Paycheck! is a non-profit business founded to promote and support for profit businesses who wish to engage in integrated employment of adults with disabilities.  The unemployment rate of the disabled community is 38%, significantly higher than the unemployment rates for individuals without a disability.  Under State Use law, for profit businesses who employ adults with disabilities are excluded from providing goods and services under the procurement code due to their corporate designation. Further, Federal Labor laws allow for subminimum pay based on output. An archaic provision under Department of Labor allowing those with disabilities to legally earn less than the minimum wage solely because of their disability.

Our goals are the same: “to encourage and assist persons with disabilities to achieve maximum personal independence through useful and productive employment by ensuring an expanded and constant market for services delivered by persons with disabilities, thereby enhancing their dignity and capacity for self-support and minimizing their dependence on welfare and entitlements.”

Our Goals:

At Peter’s Paycheck! We work to remove barriers for-profit entities face when considering employing adults with intellectual and developmental delays:

Barriers to Employment for Adults with Disabilities

A physical environment that is inaccessible or hard to navigate.

Lack of assistive tools or technologies to help the person be effective.

Negative attitudes within the work environment.

A lack of relevant systems, services, and policies.

To be eligible, the for profit must adhere to full workplace integration:

Pay at least minimum wage or higher.

Offer the same benefits, including, Paid Time Off, Health Care and Retirement

Be willing to kindly and patiently coach a worker, teaching to their strengths.

FOCUSED WORKPLACE ADJUSTMENTS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE, a win for everyone!
